Paper Based Microfluidics: Demonstration of Capillary Flows and Fluid Viscosity Determination

We have developed a patented technology for fabricating hydrophobic barriers on paper using a laser printer. This state of the art experiment which we have developed, will help students understand capillary flows, concept of calibration and determining an unknown sample from experiments done with known samples. Students can develop point of care devices used in healthcare and environmental monitoring among other applications using the flow through these channels.

Paper Based Microfluidics: Demonstration of colorimetric detection of chromium

We have developed a patented technology for creating hydrophobic barriers on paper using a laser printer. This cutting-edge method allows students to explore capillary flow, understand the fundamentals of the Beer-Lambert Law, and engage in advanced digital image processing. Through colorimetric detection of Chromium (VI), students gain practical experience in analytical chemistry. They learn to perform and plot calibration curves and conduct thorough data analysis without external instrumentation. By calculating essential metrics such as the Limit of Detection (LOD) and the Limit of Quantification (LOQ), students validate the sensitivity of their devices. This framework equips them to design low-cost point-of-care diagnostics applicable to real-world healthcare and environmental monitoring.
